IRS Rolls Out Digital Notices, EIN Verifications, and Payment Tools in Business Tax Account

Small businesses and bookkeepers: IRS Business Tax Account now delivers digital notices including CP081B refunds, CP575 EIN verification downloads, installment plan details, and OIC payments. Access tools online immediately.

Bottom Line

New BTA features give eligible businesses instant access to critical tax notices, verifications, and payment options, reducing reliance on paper and phone inquiries for faster compliance.

Businesses can now pull up refund notices and official EIN verifications with a few clicks instead of waiting weeks for mailed documents or sending requests for Letter 147C.

The IRS announced major expansions to its Business Tax Account (BTA) platform on August 6, 2026, adding an expanding library of digital notices, downloadable EIN confirmations, real-time payment plan visibility, and direct Offer in Compromise payment capabilities. These updates build on earlier 2026 expansions and deliver tangible time savings for bookkeepers, accountants, and small business owners managing federal tax obligations.

“Business Tax Account is a key part of the agency’s digital first initiative,” said IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano. “By expanding online self-service options, BTA makes it easier for eligible businesses and organizations to manage their federal tax obligations securely and conveniently online without making a phone call or traveling to a physical office.”

Expanding Library of Digital Notices

The most practical upgrade gives authorized users immediate access to digital versions of key IRS correspondence that previously arrived only by mail. Recently added notices include:

  • CP081B: "We May Have a Refund for You"
  • CP211A: Application to file extension of time approved
  • CP134R: Federal tax deposits discrepancy — Due a Refund

Users can view, download, and act on these notices directly in the BTA dashboard. Designated officials can also download Notice CP575 (Notice of New Employer Identification Number). This digital version can be used in place of the slower Letter 147C when banks or financial institutions require proof of an EIN.

For bookkeeping teams, this means earlier visibility into potential refunds, extension approvals, or deposit issues — allowing quicker reconciliation against client ledgers and faster resolution before matters escalate.

Enhanced Payment and Account Management Features

The updates also improve cash flow and debt management tools:

  • View existing installment agreement balances and details, then make payments directly toward the plan.
  • Submit payments for an accepted Offer in Compromise to settle tax debts for less than the full amount owed.

These join existing BTA functions such as viewing and paying balances due (including current-year returns, prior-year liabilities, and federal tax deposits), scheduling payments for any business day up to one year in advance, canceling scheduled payments, and maintaining a digital "wallet" of multiple bank accounts.

Additional capabilities include reviewing recently processed payments from EFTPS, wire transfers, checks, or money orders (with status on any returned items), requesting tax compliance checks, viewing the business name and address on file, granting account access to eligible employees, and downloading transcripts for payroll, income, and excise tax returns.

Eligibility Covers Broad Range of Entities

BTA now supports a wide array of organizational types following expansions earlier in 2026:

  • Sole proprietors with an IRS-issued EIN
  • Individual partners or shareholders who have an SSN or ITIN plus a Schedule K-1 on file (partners for tax years 2012-2023; shareholders for tax years 2006-2023)
  • S corporations
  • C corporations
  • Federal, state, and local governments
  • Indian tribal governments
  • Tax-exempt organizations

Eligible users must register and meet authorization requirements before accessing records. Once set up, the platform centralizes tax account management that once required multiple channels.

Impact on Daily Bookkeeping and Tax Compliance

These changes directly affect how accounting professionals track liabilities, monitor compliance, and advise clients. Digital notices eliminate mailing delays, enabling bookkeepers to update records in near real time rather than reconciling stale paper documents during month-end close.

EIN verification downloads speed up banking relationships and vendor onboarding. Real-time installment plan visibility helps prevent unexpected shortfalls when preparing financial statements. The ability to handle Offer in Compromise payments online simplifies debt resolution workflows.

Who benefits most? Sole proprietors handling their own books, bookkeeping firms managing multiple S corp and partnership clients, nonprofits tracking exempt status requirements, and any entity dealing with payroll or excise tax transcripts.

The platform reduces administrative friction in an environment where timely responses to IRS communications can mean the difference between claiming a refund and missing it. Future updates are expected to bring additional entities and capabilities, continuing the shift toward fully digital tax administration.

Businesses should verify eligibility and register at IRS.gov immediately to take advantage of the new tools. For bookkeeping professionals, integrating regular BTA reviews into client service routines now offers a competitive edge in accuracy and responsiveness.

The IRS continues to transform routine tax tasks from paper-based processes into secure, self-service digital experiences — a development that delivers concrete efficiency gains for general businesses navigating compliance demands.
